Using your name as a brand 0

Originally, I thought it was a cool idea to have a “company name” to stick on all my web development work. I’ve had a few decent names in the past, but they all usually get stale and boring to me after a while.

The idea of having to manage a company with employees isn’t nearly as attractive as earning a good living on my own. But, a one-man company doesn’t seem to attractive either. At the same time this thought came to me, I also realized there was one potential “company name” that would suit my needs and has never gotten old - my own name, Kevin Ingersoll.

So, I’ve bought two domains containing my first and last name:

  • keviningersoll.com
  • kevin-ingersoll.com

The first domain would obviously be a type-in traffic, word-of-mouth, business-card type of domain. The second would be more for SEO and I like how it looks in lowercase compared to the first.

I can’t decided how I want to configure them. Should I use strictly keviningersoll.com and ditch the other? Or should I use keviningersoll.com as above and redirect it to kevin-ingersoll.com? I’d love to hear what you think - please take a minute and reply to this post with your opinion.

Gimme your Google fridge, Dan! 1

Hey, Dan! I want your Google fridge!

First of all, I’d like to say that I love Google and I am the proud owner of one share in Google stock. Unfortunately, being a full-time (and struggling) web developer at 20 years old, I cannot afford to invest in more shares - let alone an awesome mini fridge.

If I had that fridge, I can say I’d probably use it daily. I am a tea addict, Lipton iced tea being my favorite (though, I like warm chai tea with cream in the winter). During the summer months I drink around a gallon of iced tea a day and about a half gallon during winter. It’s delicious stuff - especially when used to wash down Mike and Ikes.

I try to avoid making large batches of tea at a time because the fresh brewed taste is screwed up when it sits with everything else in the fridge. So, I usually stick to making a glass of tea at a time - and by glass, I mean about 32 ounces or your average extra large cup from a fast food restaurant. You can imagine how much time I spend making tea every day. Having a fridge dedicated to feeding my iced tea addiction and keeping me fueled with caffeine while sporting the logo of my favorite company would be the coolest (har har) thing ever! Not to mention a huge boost in my tea-brewing-and-cooling efficiency!

During the colder times of the year when I don’t drink as much tea and usually prefer it warm, I’d flick the fridge over to its heater setting and keep my chai tea steamy and delicious. I’d probably pop it open and roast my hands for a bit - gloves are a pain in the ass when you spend most of the day typing on a keyboard.

Dan, give me your Google fridge and I will cherish it forever!

Happy New Year! 0

And a late Merry Christmas. I hope you had a wonderful holiday season!

On a recent trip to Albuquerque, I spent almost the entire flight writing down all the projects and ideas I have floating around in my head and what I need to do (an can do) for each one. It came out to about seven pages! It helped clear my mind and gave me a kick of motivation to get some of the list done. It feels great to work through each task and be able to cross things off and make the list smaller.

This activity has lead to one of my New Year’s resolutions - write down my goals and what I need to do to accomplish them. I started out by writing down all of my New Year’s resolutions. Here are some of them:

  • Be earning $5,000/mo. by my birthday (June 18th)
  • Be earning $10,000/mo. by this time next year
  • Keep better track of finances
  • Get to bed earlier, sleep less, and wake up earlier (I often get to bed around 1-2am and wake up around 10-11am)
  • Form an exercise habit
  • Lease an Audi TT (Such an awesome looking car)

What’s on your list for 2008?
